I interviewed Courtney Runyon because her healing journey is so inspiring and that she identifies stress as being key to creating her illness, which is often overlooked.
The 35-year-old Texan overcame paralysis from the neck down and her autoimmune disease diagnosis of C.I.D.P – Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating polyneuropathy. She lost her home, her job, her boyfriend and her ability to shower and feed herself.
Courtney discusses the stress that she believes caused her condition and her journey back to choosing happiness, self love, health and walking the Camino de Santiago.
Courtney’s attitude around being paralysed: “I thought I could lose these years of my life or I could figure out how to love those years.”

Trauma expert, Bessel van der Kolk, was also an advisor on the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission. On one occasion he met Mandela and asked him what he attributed his deep mindfulness to. Mandela answered: “boxing”. Mandela said you had to really watch the other person, know where your body was and anticipate. Van der Kolk added: “Traumatised people are always reacting to the wrong thing. He said boxing, martial arts, the tango are all outstanding treatment. The brain has to be retrained, attuned to what other people are doing…When you are traumatised you don’t want to feel.”
He said research done on yoga and its effect on trauma proved it was more effective than any medication that has been studied. “When you do yoga you feel your body and it brings up feelings. It helps give you the courage to face your sensations…It’s safe to experience yourself. It’s contained.”
Van der Kolk was one of the first to do controlled studies on Prozac and Zoloft.
Present day healing must always consider the whole person. “Body-mind dimorphism is over,” said Van Der Kolk.
The modern psychology tool, eutaptics, is a comprehensive, holistic mind-body modality. Tapping also helps you feel deeply into your body and create mindfulness. To quote Dr Gabor Maté, we are bio-psycho-social-spiritual creatures. Everything is connected! We Tap on pain. We Tap on emotions. We Tap on sensations that come up in the body during a session. (This takes place after we capture critical information from the client) It’s a safe environment to allow emotions to bubble up. We have techniques to allow the surfacing and letting go of big traumas, safely. They become aware of triggers and their origins (always childhood). They have a tool to readjust negative emotions and reach for calm.

A CREATOR OR A VICTIM?
WHY SHOULD I CARE? WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?
- Because some things in your life might be a struggle, you may be feeling stuck or are living with anxiety.
- Because you want to claim your superpowers of being the creator of your life.
- Because you are alive and might be interested in improving your life in some way.
- Because this is where you realise you are powerful beyond measure.
For the first 7 years of life you downloaded other people’s behaviours and programs and now some of them may be disempowering. This subconscious programming is dominant. And this is where all our problems begin! The nature of our biology means we operate from the programmed mind (95% of the time) and not the creative conscious mind (only 5%). Do the maths. Things that come easily to you, do so because you have a program that accepts them. We often run into problems when we want something that is not congruent with these programs, and we wonder why life feels like a struggle. The conscious mind tries to override a negative program but the subconscious dominates.
Did you know that the function of the mind is to create coherence between your beliefs and your reality? So if you subconsciously believe you are unloveable, the mind will generate behaviour that will prove to you that you’re not loveable. And so you produce patterns of behaviour or attract the same partners in alignment with what you believe about yourself and the world. THAT’S IT RIGHT THERE. THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULD CARE. You might be operating from programs that do not enhance your growth and your happiness. FasterEFT is a method of changing subconscious programming.

WAKING UP WITH TAPPING
BELIEFS, THE PLACEBO EFFECT AND EPIGENETICS
Once you start to identify that you are running subconscious programs that may be holding you back from living a healthy and authentic life, you will start to notice the BELIEFS ATTACHED which are disempowering. It’s great to know that it’s possible to change them in a Eutaptics session.

Creator of Eutaptics/ FasterEFT, Robert G. Smith, explains the structure of belief systems. There are memories and emotions attached which keep them in place. Eutaptics techniques allow us to release the structure and update with empowering beliefs. As we change our stories from the past, our behaviour starts to change too.
What is the science behind changing our behaviour?
We know that NEURONS THAT FIRE TOGETHER WIRE TOGETHER. Negative thoughts and beliefs become entrenched the more we practise them, and eventually become subconscious – which means they play on auto pilot. With FasterEFT we create new neural pathways and connections in the brain that make positive behaviours the new normal.
“Our brain cells communicate with one another via synaptic transmission–one brain cell releases a chemical (neurotransmitter) that the next brain cell absorbs. This communication process is known as “neuronal firing.” When brain cells communicate frequently, the connection between them strengthens. In a session, a practitioner will help highlight the beliefs that are not in alignment with WHAT YOU WANT. So why is it important to have the correct beliefs? This is because the body follows the mind, now proven and accepted. A great example of this is the PLACEBO EFFECT – an indicator that the human mind has the ability to influence many aspects of our physiology, including healing. In studies, patients receiving inert substances (placebos/ sugar pills/ fake surgeries) exhibit real, measurable physiological changes. This first became evident in a 1978 study in which 40 patients were given a placebo pain killer following dental treatment. Since then, a vast array of different conditions have been reported as benefitting from placebos, including acne, Crohn’s disease, epilepsy, erectile dysfunction, ulcers, multiple sclerosis, osteoarthritis, rheumatism and colitis.
THE HUMAN MIND HAS THE CAPACITY TO POWERFULLY INFLUENCE MANY ASPECTS OF OUR PHYSIOLOGY, including our experience of pain, the alleviation of symptoms and the actual healing of some conditions. This means that we have much more control of our own health, and our own bodies, than we normally assume.

Luckily nature is always working in your favour. It also turns out, YOU ARE NOT RULED BY YOUR GENES – environmental and external factors can influence the way genes are expressed. This is the field of EPIGENETICS. This means you don’t have to get the cancer that seems to run in the family, or be overweight like many members of your ancestral line. Once you realise this, you are empowered to create your life.

Learning how to Tap is a gift to yourself!
It will help you move away from programs and patterns that are not yours, and towards your TRUE SELF and living your true purpose.
This is a self-help tool that you can draw on whenever you need to regulate your emotions. It calms down the amygdala, which is the stress centre of the brain and reduces emotional intensity. You can Tap while you are driving, while you are walking, in a quiet place at home or secretively in the midst of company. You can Tap in the heat of the moment when emotions are high, after the event or you can choose a past problem to Tap on. Once you have learnt the basic recipe you can Tap merely by touching the Tapping points or sliding your fingers over them. You can even do it in your mind. Your body will have a memory of what you are doing and respond accordingly.
Remember you are changing how you hold your problems in your mind by Tapping (de-fractionation/ disruption technique) and bringing yourself out of a subconscious trance – dwelling on a past event. You are reminding yourself that the event is over and only now is real. As you Tap notice how the picture/ feeling/ sound/ taste/smell you are Tapping on starts to change. You are instructing the subconscious mind to let go and choose a better feeling. Once your “problem” is replaced with a positive picture/ feeling/ sound etc. (however it shows up for you) this means it has “flipped” and you can start to Tap in positive statements like “I am so proud of myself”, “I choose peace and happiness”, “the past is over”, “life is amazing”. Be creative, you are listening! And best of all, you are gradually changing negative programs, patterns and beliefs, and filling the subconscious with positive, healthy references.

Dr Peta Stapleton, a clinical psychologist, has led Australian research on Tapping and explains why it’s regarded as the fourth wave in healing. She provides details of the resounding success of clinical research done at Bond University on weight loss. Subjects Tapped on food cravings for 15 minutes a day over four weeks and emerged having curbed their cravings for unhealthy food choices.
The complete results of Dr Stapleton’s pilot program’s preliminary results showed a dramatic reduction in activity in the emotional centre of the brain, responsible for food cravings.

So now to the detail of how eutaptics®/FasterEFT works.
It is an understanding of how and why reconsolidating or updating memories to POSITIVE is necessary to create positive life transformations. A memory is recorded across the cortex. But really it’s not the real experience, it’s just a recording. Inside the memory, it has components that make it seem real – visuals, feelings, sounds and maybe taste and smell. Daniela Schiller, Associate Professor, Mount Sinai Hospital, has done ground breaking research on memory consolidation.
She says memories are unstable and a window of opportunity has been created by nature each time you retrieve a memory, to change the meaning. “We have to relive the bad memories to change our memories. We are free and not slaves to our past.”
Years of research have taught Elizabeth Loftus, a professor of psychology and law at the university of California, just how unreliable our memories are. From tweaking a real memory to planting a completely fabricated one, tampering with our minds is surprisingly easy, she says. In her work, she has proven how human memory is not only unreliable, but also mutable. She is most well-known for her work in criminal law, where she has shown that eyewitness testimony can be manipulated.

She said the person you need to forgive the most is the one you find hardest to let go of. It had nothing to do with condoning behaviour; it’s just letting the whole experience go and returning to the present moment. They were also in pain doing the best they could with the knowledge they had. “To heal we need to change our thinking, to forgive and to love and accept ourselves more. This is the road to freedom.”
The worst thing we can do is get angry at ourselves, she said. All the joy goes out of a child if you yell and scream at them. The same thing happens to the little child in us. we lose our joy, spontaneity, creativity. Accept how you are right now, truly loving you. Don’t wait till you lose weight, have the right job. You are denying your existence right now. Don’t wait till you’re perfect. wasting lives..We are always unfolding in the best way we can…When we truly love ourselves no negative patterns can survive.”

At 86 years old, Louise said she was still working on improving herself. In a Tapping session with Nick Ortner (EFT) in 2013, she Tapped on a pressure in her neck which often showed up when something nice was about to happen. She traced it back to her step father holding her head under the water, with his thumb in that exact place on her neck.

Make a list of the things that bother you about yourself – all of the things you don’t like about yourself – and then pick the worst one.
Think about it, and notice how you know it bothers you.
What is it you dislike so much, and why?
Keep repeating the FasterEFT technique until you can’t find that feeling of being bothered by it anymore.
Keep going until it changes.
Go through the list, doing the same with each thing you don’t like about yourself.

It’s the most zippy self-help tool because it helps regulate emotions and gives you back control. It calms the physical reactions in the body/ the stress response and transforms how you hold negative experiences and memories. As you Tap you guide yourself towards better beliefs. Thousands of people across the world have had great results and personal transformation. And most of them keep Tapping as problems arise.
Being a human being means we are constantly growing. Tapping helps us adjust.
It’s very simple and easy.
Choose a problem and decide what you DON’T WANT and WHAT YOU DO WANT.
HOW DO YOU KNOW IT’S A PROBLEM FOR YOU? HOW DOES IT SHOW UP IN YOUR LIFE? IDENTIFY WHAT IT IS.
Notice what is bothering you. How big is it? What sensations do you have in your body when you think about it?
AIM AT THE PROBLEM
Look at the image/ faces, tone of voice, feeling.
You can Tap on a sensation in your stomach or a headache. You don’t have to know where it came from.
Use two fingers to Tap the following points, while focusing on the feeling of your fingers on your skin:
- between your eyebrows
- beside your eye
- under your eye
- just below your collarbone
While you are Tapping, say “Let it go”.
You can also add “It’s safe to let it go. Just let it all go.”
Also, if you don’t know why you feel bad you can say: “whatever it means, whatever it represents. I let it go.” You are instructing the subconscious – it knows what it is.
Note: It doesn’t matter which side you tap – you can do either side, or both if you like. These points are where Chinese meridian points are located and connected to the bodies’ organs which produce a stress reaction.
Grab your wrist (more meridian points), take a deep breath, blow it away, and say “PEACE” – and go to a PEACEFUL MEMORY/ PLACE AND BE THERE. Run the good feeling through your body.
Go back to your problem and notice how it’s changed.
Do you feel different?
Is the intensity of the feeling different?
Does the memory look or sound different?
Usually your mind will lead you where you need to go and bring up memories. Tap wherever the mind leads you. You can go to a memory and just Tap on it, for example, when your father yelled at you. Remind yourself that it’s over and it’s not real anymore. Make a decision to release it. Keep Tapping and it won’t play the same eventually. You are changing the way you represent it. Tap till you “flip” it and everyone is happy in the memory. It can’t play the same way again.
Change your story and change your life. Your subconscious mind is working on your behalf. Choose a great story for your life. Your life will follow your new script.
Always repeat until the feeling or memory has ‘flipped” from negative to positive, and the pictures, words, sensations are positive.
YOUR WORLD IS CHANGING.

WATCH YOUR MIND
Mindfulness, affirmations, gratitude and the art of keeping a happy journal
Techniques used in eutaptics/ FasterEFT bolster the practice of MINDFULNESS in your every day life.
Professor Mark Williams, the Director of the Oxford Mindfulness Centre, and years of research on mindfulness, says when you train in mindfulness, brain patterns change.
Mindfulness activates the compassion centre of the brain without activating the stories, which often turns into overthinking or rumination, he says. Professor Williams says people often develop a tunnel vision where they can’t see solutions to problems. Avoiding thoughts makes it worse.
If people are not mindful the amygdala, where the stress response is located, is overactive. Practising mindfulness “dampens down” the amygdala so people are less likely to be stressed and less likely to respond to own negative thinking.
Whatever you are thinking and telling yourself has tremendous impact on your life. You For example, by saying “I’m always late”, or ”I’m useless at Maths”, your are reinforcing it. Dr Bruce Lipton and Dr Joe Dispenza advocate using positive affirmations through REPETITION to bypass the conscious mind and create change in the subconscious mind. You are always listening! Affirmations also serve to boost self-esteem and confidence. TIP: Always say them in the present as by doing so you are telling your mind that this is already happening, that you are already this person. FEEL the statements to be true. If there is resistance, Tap on it till it feels like its your truth. CREATE A LIST OF AFFIRMATIONS AND SAY THEM TO YOURSELF every morning and evening just before you go to sleep when you are in Theta brain waves, which means the subconscious is receptive.
Examples: I AM LOVED, I AM LEARNING EVERY DAY, I AM FULL OF ENERGY, I AM HEALTHY, I AM JOYOUS.
Practising gratitude has endless benefits. Being thankful regularly makes you feel more alive, sleep better, experience positive emotions and build a stronger immune system. Integral to the eutaptics/ FasterEFT journey is keeping a happy journal. This is a dedication to yourself. It’s about building gratitude and mindfulness, and it’s about recognising and noting the good things in your life. IT’S ABOUT PRACTISING FEELING GOOD. Your journal becomes a powerful and meaningful collection of happy memories, thoughts, positive affirmations, photos, letters, quotes that you like, goals dreams and what you’re grateful for.
The feeling states we all desire are universal. They include love, joy, peace, belonging, security and comfort.
GENERATING THESE FEELINGS IS THE MOST CREATIVE THING YOU CAN DO WITH YOUR LIFE. Get clear on how you want to feel. Then, do stuff that makes you feel that way.

Feeling resistance to those words? Trace it back and do a few rounds of Tapping. Remember, your brain is always keeping you safe and in alignment with your clan and your subconscious beliefs. We also have to give ourselves permission to change. It may feel uncomfortable at first to embrace your new, true self. Who will you be? How will this affect those around you? This is a journey to truth and freedom. It gets easier with each step. More Tapping will keep you on track.
Sometimes it’s hard to let go of our stories. These may be stories of being a victim, and you’ve built a fortress from it. It defines you. It’s hard to let go the pain and forgive those who’ve wronged us. FORGIVENESS IS AN ACT OF HEALING. Forgiving others and forgiving yourself. It means letting go anger, bitterness and guilt; putting it behind you and moving on towards peace. Keep Tapping and letting go bit by bit, story by story.
FIND THE GIFTS AND WISDOM FROM YOUR ADVERSITIES.
For example, in my own life, I did not have a voice for so long and pleased everyone above myself. This has taught me to value myself more and a love of freedom. What a gift! I now see it in a positive way. I’m now helping others to do the same.

DREAM WILDLY AND SET GOALS – oh the power of it.
Write down your goals and dreams in your happy journal. Create a vision board (or create one on Pinterest) of what you want with pictures, quotes, affirmations and how you want to feel. What will you have to believe about yourself in order to have this? Tap on any resistance. Tap on all the ways you know how you can’t have what you want. All the related memories you have from the past.
Writing down your goals turns dreams into reality.
I wrote down my goals in a coaching group three years ago. Everything I wrote down came true! This included walking the Camino de Santiago and becoming a FasterEFT practitioner. It made me sit up and realise how powerful the act of intention is and writing down what you desire. As you start to let go of unwanted patterns, programs and negative beliefs, you will clear your path of resistance.
An amazing example of the power of writing down goals, is Debbie Millman’s story. The renowned designer and educator wrote down in detail how she wanted her life to look in 10 years time. She realised 10 years later it had all come true.
Finally, there is ACTION. Decide what you are going to do and do it. Keep stepping towards authentic you and what you want, bit by bit, action by action. If not now when? Honour your one wild and precious life by living fully and wholeheartedly.
